OUT OF THIS WORLD

April 8-28, 2023

Fantastic art continues to capture the modern imagination with art that depicts magical or other supernatural themes, ideas, creatures, or settings. It inspires creativity and appreciation in  its own right and endlessly intrigues artists, poets, philosophers, photographers, and all others who have somehow been able to achieve that willing suspension of disbelief and manipulation of reality.

The Joe Center for the Arts invites artists of all levels to implement their creative ideas for our theme using any media and style and to share them for consideration in this juried exhibition.

Juror for this show:

Sydni Gause, Adjunct Professor of Art, Gulf Coast State College.

SIMS is ready for 2023 and all the great classes we've got lined up!

Our opening reception is Friday, January 13th from 6-8 PM ET where you'll be able to meet all the Artists who'll be teaching in January and February.

Come enjoy refreshments, see the artists work on display and for sale.  Free & Open to the Public

Meet our 2023 SIMS Invited Guest Artist, Gary Pope, Jr.

In my artwork, African culture is an important part of my art because my culture is what makes my artwork have meaning to me. I feel that my culture makes me a better artist because both American culture and African culture influence me. Both cultures help me as an artist. Moreover, as an artist, I have the ability to express myself without saying a word. Like the old saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. I like having the audience “read” my artwork as if he or she is reading a novel. I want the audience to just read my artwork but to enjoy it as well. I feel that art is educational; it has a message for all people. For instance, a person could see a particular artwork as a specific time in history. As an artist, I have the power to recreate special events, and make them last throughout time.

In my artwork, drawings are very important because drawings are the blueprints for my paintings, designs, and other art projects. My ideas are sketched out on paper and I can refer back to them when I begin my art projects. However, in practicing form making, drawings are quicker and less expensive than most mediums. For example, I can do many sketches of a particular artwork, because I do know how I want the composition to be resolved. By doing sketches, I can arrange my composition to my liking. As an artist, drawings have helped me to express my ideas in many art projects.

Gary graduated from Rutherford High School 1993 and attended Gulf Coast State college.

FANTASTIC FIBERS

APRIL 8 - MAY 20, 2022

Exploring the themes and techniques of Fiber Art, our Fantastic Fibers Show/Exhibit celebrates the heritage of the past as well as all the ways artists of today are taking these age-old art forms to a new level. You may be a professional, an amateur, an enthusiast, or just an artist who enjoys sharing your talents with others. The Joe invites artists of all skill levels to enter their works of fiber art for jury consideration for the Fantastic Fibers Show.

WHAT IS FIBER ART?

Fiber Art is art that incorporates natural or man-made fibrous materials which can be made into art. This may include but not limited to wall hangings, tapestries, and objects that are braided, coiled, knotted, knitted, twined, or wrapped. Fabrics are also fiber, some are hand-dyed and manipulated into works of art, some into wearable art, incorporating thread, yarn, string, rope, felt, leather and even beads. Basket weaving is also a form of fiber art and artists might use such items as leaves, plant stems, grasses and bark. Paper making is another form of fiber art using organic materials as well as recycled papers and fabrics. Any of these works of art may be two or three dimensional.
